Kicking it off this week with the Brittney Griner case. I’ve spoken about this case a couple of times before on here. The WNBA star was arrested in Russia in February this year for possession of 0.7 grams of hashish oil (in vape cartridges). In Russia, up to 6 grams of weed is punishable by detention of 15 days. For some reason, Griner was sentenced last week to 9 years in prison. This is clearly racially and politically motivated and makes zero sense, in accordance with Russia’s own laws. My heart goes out to Griner and her family. A career over, lives ruined, over something insanely trivial. There are plans for an appeal and apparently the two nations are in talks for a prisoner swap, which could at least see Griner back on US soil. Here’s hoping this ridiculous conviction gets all the way overturned at some point.
Things that caught my eye this week
This article about the use of the word ‘spaz’ is an interesting one. Lizzo and Beyonce both used the word in lyrics of recent songs and changed them when they received a backlash. This article tracks the history of the word and how it has changed over time and has different meanings depending on geography and culture. As the world continues to shift in ways to be more open, understanding and inclusive, I imagine there will be many bumps in the road around language like this as everyone continues to find their way.
Food for Thought
If you notice yourself having to tone down a little around certain people, dimming your light a bit, or not wanting to be ‘too much’, it might be time to consider, those aren’t your people.
Your people want to see you living in the fullest expression of yourself, always. No need to sand the rough edges down. How freeing it is to not have to constantly put on a facade.

This week, Biggie wants to remind you that sometimes a task might look too big, but you have the skills to handle it. Every now and then it pays to bite off more than you can chew.
Until next week, smile at strangers, spread good vibes, be nice to people.
