Thursday Murmurings
Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with my eternal crush, J Lo. Last week, she posted this video of her working out. Lemme tell ya what I appreciate about J Lo - that movement is just a part of her daily life. She trains hard. This bitch is out here at 52, looking like she’s 24 and giving your average gym bro a run for their money. I love that she’s showcasing that you don’t have to slow down as you age, you can still train hard and effectively and treat your body with the respect it deserves. I fully intend to be this badass well into my fifties and beyond and J Lo is serving as a reminder that that is very possible.
Things that caught my eye this week
I lived in Tokyo for a year in my twenties, which was a life changing year if ever there was one. A stand out memory is definitely attending a Sumo event one Sunday. Sumo wrestlers, when you see them in real life, look like ancient gods. There is so much reverence around them as people and the event itself, it’s truly something you have to experience to believe.
Women have not traditionally been allowed in the sport because, well…patriarchy but young girls are starting to take it up with a view to competing. In a country that is still caught up in very traditional gender roles, I love that these young badasses are making moves to change that.
Food for thought
Your body is wonderful. It’s frikkin’ great. And it’s great right now. Yes, even the flabby bits, the cellulite, the laugh lines, that weird mole - whatever the thing is that’s driving you nuts about your body, I guarantee it, someone loves that specific bit of you, a lot. The amount of neurons that need to fire in your brain to get you to so much as wiggle your pinky toe is astounding and we’re just out here, moving our whole bodies around every day like it’s nothing? BITCH, WE’RE WALKING MIRACLES! Act like it!
You should subscribe to the paid version of The Murmuration because…
On Monday’s paid version of the newsletter I’m gonna be talking about my recent ab wheel obsession (if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have noticed my daily videos of me using this piece of equipment that was invented by the devil himself). But is it really about the ab wheel, or is it about discipline and training yourself to accept that the only way to improve at something you’re bad at is to practice it consistently and about the lessons you learn from doing that? Is the ab wheel the key to unlocking new levels of badassery within yourself? Subscribe to find out!
