Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with a lil reminder that September is upon us this weekend. My favourite season is right around the corner - give me chunky knits, candlelight, pumpkin stuff and early sunsets. I know for many it’s a tough transition into earlier nights and colder temps, but one thing I love about September is it kinda has ‘new year’ kinda vibes. I guess no matter how old we get, to a degree we will always be beholden to the school calendar.
Anyhoo, all that to say, this weekend may be a great time to do a little reflection and some journaling. Coming into this last quarter of the year, what are you proud of achieving thus far? What have been your highlights? Where do you feel you still need to do some work? Is there a major thing that you wanted to tick off this year that you haven’t quite done yet? What steps can you put in place to get you closer before the year’s end?
Any excuse to dive into a new journal, right?
I suggest lighting some candles and drinking something pumpkin-y while you do it ;-)
Things that caught my eye this week
I’ve written extensively on here before about my deep and enduring love for the show My So-Called Life. Well, if you would like to feel super old, 2024 is the 30th anniversary of this groundbreaking show. I really loved this piece for highlighting that Ricky Vasquez was TV’s first openly gay main character at the time. His story arc through the series is utterly heartbreaking. In the series finale, where Delia admits to Ricky that she has a crush on him, even though she knows he’s gay and he says ‘I don’t usually say it. I mean, I’ve never actually…said it.’ Whew. Me, a bisexual girl, who was absolutely terrified to admit it, found so much comfort in Ricky’s journey and his courage to be himself.
Long live My So-Called Life - I will re-watch it every year forever!
Food for thought
Sometimes we hold onto a dream so tightly we suffocate it. We protect it in the vice-like grip of our imaginations so hard, we prevent it from ever coming into being. So, loosen up, relax, breathe. Allow space for it to be birthed imperfectly. Maybe your insistence that it should be done in exactly a certain way is really just ensuring it never will. Let fate and chance and magic in to play their parts. Surrender a piece of the dream to them and let them help you see it in a new light.

In Monday’s letter I’m looking at the cost of being single. As the number of single and child-free women is on the rise and we become significant contributors to the economy, isn’t it time that this lifestyle choice was acknowledged? Particularly from a political perspective, it feels like policy makers seem to be completely ignoring the fact that more people live alone than ever before. For more and more people, this isn’t a temporary ‘in between relationships’ type of vibe, but more of a lifestyle choice - so when will we get a break?!

Your Weekly Biggie Smalls (P)update
This week, Biggie would like to remind you that it was International Dog Day earlier this week and he doesn’t want to brag or anything, but he’s the best. He has surveyed other dogs in the area and I’m sure, in a completely unbiased result, has concluded that he does the best zoomies, is the best stealer of balls from the park, has absolutely unparalleled snuggle skills and was voted ‘loudest snorer’ by a panel of his peers. He just would like a little appreciation around here.
Until next week; smile at strangers, spread good vibes, be nice to people.
I find fall to be the best time to reflect on the year and set or adjust goals; rather than January when I feel like resting. Could definitely be the new school hear rhythm we're all so accustomed to. This Sept I'll be starting a new job that is a career pivot for me. Feels like the perfect time to reflect on the year, my last job, maybe get a new fall outfit and notebook for the first day of work!
