Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
I’ve steeped myself in kick ass women doing kick ass things this week. Hopefully the stories below lift you up, make you feel empowered or just fill you with good feels.
I was randomly thinking about the awesomeness of Iris Apfel the other day and found this Vogue piece with 10 of her best quotes about living, ageing and style. I just love her. Oh and if you haven’t watched the documentary about her, do yourself a favour and rectify that immediately.
I loved reading this piece on how great Toni Morrison was as an editor at Random House. This quote in particular: “She tenaciously carved out a space in an unyielding industry, lovingly tilled the soil, and helped build an ecosystem whose fruits are still being born today. She was a gardener of that ‘racial memory’ and through her pivotal time as an editor, she forever changed the landscape of publishing and our culture.” Whew! Did she ever! What a legacy.
Over the Easter weekend, I watched Tina, the documentary about Tina Turner. If you’ve ever taken a spin class with me and experienced the towel whipping, teeth grinning, full body joy that comes over me when blasting Proud Mary, you’ll be unsurprised to hear, I love her. It’s a great documentary, but also devastatingly sad in parts. There are moments in it that made me full on, snot-and-mascara-streaming-down-my-face cry. What a woman. What a life. Truly a must watch.
Women now hold many of the jobs controlling the world’s largest economy. This, my friends, is quite the shift and will inevitably lead to ‘a more inclusive - in the true sense of the word - response to the many, many challenges that are the legacy of COVID.’ Who knew? Women being in positions of power improves the lives of many. In other news, water is wet, right?
Dr Jill Biden caused Conservative blood pressures to rise by existing as a 71 year old woman with a sense of style. These kind of things always make me LOL heartily as the rampant ageism is pretty gross. Seeing older women live boldly and play with their style inspires me massively. Any sentiment to the contrary plays into the (excuse the pun) age old trope that women should just resign themselves to slowly disappearing past the age of 40. WE’RE NOT DOING THAT ANYMORE! Continue to slay, Dr Biden. We appreciate you!
I’d like to start a regular feature here where I interview women over 60 and they share with us their best life advice, be it on career, spirituality, family, self care - anything. We have so much to learn from the generation before us, I’d love to give voice to their stories. If you know an older, wiser woman who has some gems to share with us, drop me a note and let me know how to contact them. Thanks!
