Happy Thursday, ya beauties,
Kicking it off this week with a heavy heart. I read about the case of Lauren Smith-Fields last week. Lauren was 23 years old and was found dead in her apartment after a Bumble date. As is unfortunately so often the case in the deaths of black women, the police seem to have completely fumbled the investigation right from the jump, mainly in that they seem to barely be investigating it at all. I have nothing to add here, other than a heavy heart and that the safety of women, particularly black women, never seems to be taken seriously. Whether you are one for prayer, meditation or simply the transmission of loving vibes, please take a moment today to keep Lauren and her family in your thoughts. Hopefully the police get off their asses and actually figure out what the hell happened here.
Things that caught my eye this week
I love a good old timey insult. I stumbled upon this little collection of some of Virginia Wolf’s most savage ones and now I’m almost itching for an excuse to describe someone as ‘…limp and damp and milder than the breath of a cow.’ ‘Cause like, what?!
Food for thought
We are grown. Stop thinking you have to adapt who you are to make those around you more comfortable, to fit in, for them to like you more. All these years you’ve been alive, all these experiences you’ve had, every single tiny little moment that went in to you being you and you try to change that the second you feel someone might not jive with it? Fuck that. And also, how dare you?! There is literally one you on the planet, just one. You owe the world the truest, wildest, most authentic version of yourself, unashamedly, unabashedly, beautifully you. Oh sure, there are always improvements that can be made, behaviours that can be worked on, but someone who tries to fuck with your essence, anyone who says you should be changing that…red flag, sis. Those are not your people.
You should subscribe to the paid version of The Murmuration because…
On Monday’s paid edition of The Murmuration we’re going to talk about our female need to constantly over apologise. We apologise at the start of sentences, we apologise at the end, we apologise when it doesn’t even make sense to apologise, we apologise when there isn’t even anything to apologise for. We apologise for having opinions, we apologise to take the edge of requests, we apologise for stating boundaries. It seems we’re sorry for just existing and on Monday I’m giving us a collective pep talk on how to cut that shit out, ‘cause seriously, enough is enough already!
