Happy Thursday all!
Here’s what’s caught my eye this week…
Well, I’ve gotta be real with ya - lately I haven’t been able to think of much other than Sarah Everard, the London woman who was found murdered last week after going missing a week earlier. A police officer has been charged with her murder. These situations seem to, almost by default, make us run through the list of harrassment, assaults and unsafe situations we’ve all found ourselves in at the hands of men. Not to mention the insane precautions we all take without even thinking about them, so programmed are we to live in fear (carrying your keys between your knuckles, not having headphones in at night, tucking your hair in your jacket, the obligatory ‘text me when you get home’ that ends every girls night out, the list could quite literally go on and on). It’s a lot. And it weighs heavily on all of us. I don’t have much to add to the conversation other than I feel the sadness and fear I imagine a whole lot of us are feeling right now. Protect your peace however you need to, especially while all this does endless loops on the news cycle. And it’s with a heavy heart and a life’s worth of rage that I say continue to stay safe and protect yourself, because when the person accused of commiting the crime is a police officer, well…*sigh*, I guess we have to be extra vigilent. I’d love to hear how you’re finding ways to stay positive and hopeful through all this.
If you haven’t watched the Netflix series, Unorthodox, I highly recommend. It’s based on Deborah Feldman’s memoir about her leaving the Satmar Hasidic community in Brooklyn. I listened to her interviewed on Fresh Air podcast this week and her story is so fascinating. I definitely plan to buy the book and give that a good read too.
It’s not like we couldn’t assume that women would be screwed over by the pandemic more than men, but it was still quite the eye-opener to read this article and see how much. And to think, the long terms effects of it all probably won’t be so kind to us either. So give that a read if you feel like channeling your rage somewhere.
You know how you feel like this past year, you’ve been forgetting things a lot or you’re just in this constant haze? Yeah, apparently that’s a pandemic-related thing. How do you feel your behaviour has changed this past year? Let me know in the comments.
And just to end this on a positive note, here’s 12 badass women who changed the course of human history.
