Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with one of my favourite quotes, just because it’s something I like to remind myself of often and I think every other woman should too:
"You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don't owe it to your mother, you don't owe it to your children, you don't owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked 'female.'" - Erin Mckean
And the church said ‘AMEN!’
Now onto some things I enjoyed reading this week:
I really enjoyed this piece about TikTok and the Vibes Revival. I’m too old to be on or understand TikTok, but as someone who is an appreciator of vibes, even a purveyor of them at times, I like the notion that all you really need to do is be present and notice them.
This piece about hiding from your money troubles was so damn relatable (minus the drug addiction). And I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels so. One day, I’ll write about why the hell money is so difficult to talk about and deal with. Not today, but some day.
If you regularly used the words ‘I’m gonna wear jeans and a nice top!’ in the early ‘00s, this piece on the evolution of the going-out top is a fun read, if for no other reason than the nostalgia.
I’m forever a fan of reading lists. ‘11 Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Rut’ - I’ve added a few of these to my list. I’m currently reading Educated by Tara Westover, which I’m really enjoying. What are you curled up with at the moment?
I am fascinated by people who like to think of themselves as criminal masterminds and come up with some scheme that goes completely off the rails. This story of what is being referred to as ‘one of Hollywood’s most audacious ponzi schemes’ is a mind-boggling read. This fella invented a bunch of fake deals with Netflix and HBO and somehow managed to scam a bunch of people out of a total of $690 Million. SIX HUNDRED AND NINETY MILLION DOLLARS, MATE! Like, how?! Talk about having a set of cajones.
In Monday’s Murmuration, I’m talking about starting over, particularly when you’re deep into your 30s.
“Naturally, there are things you will miss about your old life (Saturday morning strolls down Portobello Road as all the market traders are setting up, being one of them), but you have to throw yourself into the here and now and accept that what was, is no longer, but what is to come can be equally or more exciting.”
If you haven’t subscribed to the Monday Murmurations yet, what’s stopping ya?! Get essays and think pieces on the big stuff that effects us as 35+ year old women. It’s $5 per month or $50 for the year and you can subscribe by clicking here.
Until next week, smile at strangers, spread good vibes, be nice to people.
