Happy Thursday, ya beauties,
Kicking it off this week with Parris Goebel. As I watched the Rihanna Superbowl Half Time performance (the day after, because who’s staying up past 9pm?!), the dancer in me was 5,6,7,8-ing and cutting shapes in my living room. While the effortless cool of Rihanna wowed, without a doubt, for me, the true star of that performance was the choreography and this queen, Parris Goebel, was behind it. Parris is from New Zealand and has a truly inspirational come up story. She now works with the biggest names in the biz. Anyway, just taking a moment to salute an exceptionally talented Queen (while I try to learn that choreography *spins* *high kicks* *twerks*)
Things that caught my eye this week
This article about ‘Are you really super busy or are you just super disorganised?’ put a voice to much of what I’ve been thinking about hustle culture recently. It made me think of when I lived in Tokyo and used to see so many stats about how the Japanese workforce is the hardest working but least productive. There is such a hierarchy in society there that to leave work before your boss is a huge no-no, so people just hang around, being fake busy, putting in 12+ hour days at the office, but never actually really getting much done. I think the sheer number of things we have to distract us from a task at hand these days is sending many of us the same way. I’m in the process of trying to find better work flows for myself, but those 20 minute YouTube rabbit holes are so damn easy to fall down. Sigh.
Food for thought
What if you stopped cutting yourself off at the knees and allowed yourself to believe that everything you want in this life is possible and can be yours? What if you stopped thinking it only happens to other people or it’s too grandiose to ever be your life? What if your decision to ‘tough it out’ and stay where you’re at is the thing that’s getting in the way of your joy? What if you just surrendered to what’s possible for you, no matter how scary it is or how long it takes?
Upgrade to Paid
In Monday’s paid edition of The Murmuration, I’m talking about the joys of singledom (especially over 40), but the annoyance of how damn expensive it is to experience these joys. The way the system is rigged against those of us who aren’t partnered and how that may well be keeping people in unhealthy and sometimes unsafe relationships. Let’s talk about it! Upgrade to paid and join me on Monday.
Your Weekly Biggie Smalls (P)update
This week, Biggie just wants to remind you that you’re fucking fabulous, OK? He doesn’t want you to question your worth. He feels really strongly that you should be rooted in the truth of your magnificent essence at all times. And he wants you to know he’ll stare you down just like this whenever you doubt yourself (until you either believe or give him snuggles, whichever comes first).

The winter plays havoc with my skin, particularly drying out my hands. I’ve tried all sorts of fancy hand creams but frankly, nothing has worked quite as well as O’Keeffe’s Working Hands. Does it look like it’s hand cream exclusively for men 50+ who just pulled a 14 hour day on a building site? Yes, but fuck it, it works.
I’ve been getting a lot of compliments about my hair recently and I mean, thanks, because my hair really does seem to be experiencing a moment. It is long and luscious and has wonderfully defined curls. I long for a day my curly haired queens ditch the hair straighteners and embrace their bouncy corkscrew wonderfulness. So here’s what seems to have elevated my mane: Coco & Eve Miracle Hair Elixir and Like A Virgin Hair Masque. Probably the only times I’ve been swayed to buy something from an Instagram ad but I’ll be damned if they don’t work a treat. And DesignMe Bounce.Me Curl Balm adds wonderful definition and hold.
Until next week; smile at strangers, spread good vibes, be nice to people.
