Kicking it off this week with a shout out to AOC whose choice of dress for the Met Gala caused quite the stir. Never one to be bothered about ruffling a few feathers, it’s inspiring to see this young senator stick to her beliefs and continually stick it to the man. And frankly, when you’re pissing off Republicans, you’re doing something right.
Also, the dress was a designed by Aurora James, a black, female, Canadian designer. YES!
Things that caught my eye this week:
“When Doug and Ashley Benefield started a ballet company, it wasn’t supposed to end in death.” I read that headline and thought ‘wow, that sounds like it took a left turn.’ So I read it and HOLY SHIT, PEOPLE! This story takes left turns, right turns, U-turns, roundabouts and everything in between. The whole thing is absolutely bonkers. It’s a long read, but it’s worth it.
There have been a lot of articles, especially since the start of the pandemic, about how we’re changing the way we work. But I think this exploration of the fact that some people don’t want a career, is really important. It took me a long time to get my head around the fact that some people just are not career driven. And I think the aforementioned changes in the ways we work now, may be more accommodating of that fact. We can hope at least.
Feeling lonely and like you have no friends? You are literally not alone.
More Murmuring…
In Monday’s paid edition of the newsletter, I’m talking pandemic anxiety and grieving what was:
“I’m lucky to live in a part of the world where we’ve had relatively low COVID case numbers since the beginning of the pandemic. But every time I see the case numbers climbing here, I get that knot in my stomach, that feeling that this is just what it’s going to be now; an endless cycle of lockdowns, anti-vax hysteria, lifelong mask wearing.
It may well have been a pipe dream to ever think we’d all get on the same page, globally. Even if we get things under control here, there’ll never be a guarantee that people won’t travel to areas that haven’t taken it so seriously and bring the virus back with them. Will we be playing Whack-a-Mole with this thing forever?
I wear a mask, I got vaccinated the first chance I got, during lockdowns I stay put and even when we’re not in lockdown, I keep my activity to a minimum. I’m doing my bit, because I care about my fellow humans. I’m exhausted and I’m scared. I want to get off this ride.”
