Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with Julia Stewart. Yeah, I’d never heard of her either. Julia worked as a waitress at IHOP when she was 16. Over the years, she worked in restaurants, grafting her way to a high up position at American chain restaurant, Applebee’s. When she was denied a promotion there that she thought she’d been promised, she became the CEO of IHOP and engineered a takeover of Applebee’s.
And really, this is the level of petty I’m here for.
Oh, you don’t wanna give me the promotion? Cool, bro. I’LL TAKE OVER YOUR ENTIRE COMPANY.
I mean, in all seriousness, yes I do take issue with the savageness of capitalism and how these things are allowed to happen, but I do still admire Ms Stewart’s belief in herself and her abilities.
May she be a reminder to us all that we do not need to accept these career no’s and it’s OK for us to level up in big, bold ways.
Things that caught my eye this week
I’m a big fan of the podcast Criminal (and not just because the host, Phoebe Judge, has a voice that is absolutely dreamy). She did an episode recently that was against the grain of what she usually does, all about the loss of her mother, Valentine. It is such a touching tribute, a beautiful insight into navigating a parent’s illness, knowing the clock is running out. She had recorded conversations with her mum, so has all these lovely moments that she shares throughout the episode. As someone who is finding the very concept of one day losing my parents to be almost unbearable, I’m finding this kind of content to be strangely comforting.
Anyway, if you’re also grappling with the concept of aging and loss, this is a really good episode to listen to.
Food for thought
Even on your worst day, there is good woven into it. Sometimes, blink and you’ll miss the moments, but they’re there. A stranger smiled at you but maybe you just didn’t look up in time. Your hair had just the kind of bounce you like. There was that brief moment where the sun broke through the clouds and shone directly on your face. The train door stayed open for you without you having to run. They’re like little winks from The Universe, reminders that you are always being held up by the good.
You should upgrade to the paid version of The Murmuration because…
On Monday’s edition of the letter, I’m talking about how I know when it’s time to make big life changes. As someone who’s made a lot of them (and is about to make yet another!), I am well versed in how to pay attention to my spidey senses and shake up my life when needed. Is it scary? Challenging? Frustrating? Yeah, all of those things, but if you wanna know how to navigate those feels, upgrade your subscription and read all about it on Monday.
