Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, New Zealand’s youngest parliamentarian, who went viral a couple of weeks back when she performed a haka in parliament to protest a bill that would affect Maori rights. At just 22 years old, Maipi-Clarke is such an incredible example of standing up for what you believe and speaking truth to power.
I have watched the video of her and her colleagues doing that haka probably 30 times and whew…it moves me every time. I can’t be the only one who gets emotional whenever I see people do a haka, right?
Anyway, if Maipi-Clarke is anything to go by, I think the kids are gonna be alright.
Things that caught my eye this week
This advice column from The Guardian, in which they debate whether the benefits of ‘pretty privilege’ outweigh the time and monetary investments in constantly thinking, worrying and performing beauty, hits hard and is most definitely worth a read. As someone who considers herself somewhat of an ugly duckling, I have often wondered how my life would’ve been different had I had access to pretty privilege. I’m much more comfortable with my appearance these days, but I too spend an awful lot of time engaging in beauty rituals that will never have been looking anything above average, so I’m not quite sure why I bother! Anyhoo, the column is worth a read and it’s an interesting debate.
Food for thought
Sometimes, you need to blow it all up. You don’t always understand why, you just know that what is, right now, is not working. And so you crash, burn, implode, set it alight. It’s terrifying, confusing, uncertain and feels like an end to all things. But then, as you stand among the embers of what was, you see the blueprint of what’s next. And then it all makes sense.
