Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with Uzo Aduba. I’ve been rewatching her season of In Treatment because a) it’s a frikkin’ masterpiece, b) she is A+ top notch give-her-all-the-awards good in this show and it’s a travesty that hasn’t been recognised and c) the wardrobe department absolutely ATE. Every. Single. Outfit. Serves. It’s bordering on sickening. Like, at least have some pop ups on the screen telling us where these fits are from. We need the details, damnit! Anyway, if you haven’t watched this show, do so immediately.
Things that caught my eye this week
I have often heard older women talk about becoming invisible. Mostly I’ve heard it in relation to the male gaze, but this piece hit me hard - this woman talking about how it’s just everyone, it’s society in general that just dismisses you once you reach a certain age. And as I read on, about her reflections on how much of her feelings were invested in the opinions of men, the harsh realities of just navigating the world as a young woman…ugh, it all just hit me in the gut. It’s so relatable. And so sad. But ultimately, hopeful. Here’s to meeting other invisible women as we travel down this road.
Food for thought
What is it that you want? Not you in relation to your peers. Not you in relation to societal expectations. Not you in relation to the guilt you feel over what you think you should want. Like, what do you actually want out of this one life that you get? Be honest. Right, now, stomp both your feet down in that truth and pursue that thing with a relentless enthusiasm. If so much as an ember of that desire is in you, you should act like a goddamn arsonist until the flame of that passion burns as big as the dream. The world wants to see you in love with your life. Go do the thing.
You should subscribe to the paid edition of The Murmuration because…
On Monday’s paid edition of The Murmuration, I’ll be talking life as an introvert. People can often be surprised that I identify as that, mainly because introversion is often confused with shyness. I’m confident and outgoing, I can work a crowd like you wouldn’t believe, but my level of introvertedness belies all comprehension. Since moving to Canada, it feels like I’ve become even more so and all of a sudden, at this stage of life, it feels like I need to battle against it a little bit, for a variety of reasons and frankly, that is scaring the fuck out of me. Join me on Monday and swim around in my existential angst with me!
Your weekly Biggie Smalls (P)update
This week, Biggie wants to remind you that you should take that nap, have that snuggle, order that take out. You’re allowed to recharge. Sometimes the world can just wait a little.
