Happy Thursday, ya beauties!
Kicking it off this week with a bit o’ lingerie. I was scrolling through Instagram stories the other day and an ad popped up for Understatement lingerie, with this beauty modelling some of their stuff. I held a finger on the screen to really look at this (and not just ‘cause she has a great rack). I was so caught off guard by an older woman being used in a lingerie ad, wearing sexy lingerie, her body not retouched and her just looking like an absolute smoke show. How refreshing! A perusal of their site is an absolute treat - women with regular bodies, no retouching, sexy as hell. I’m legit going to buy some lingerie from them purely because of their choice to acknowledge that older women are sexy. This is not sponsored in any way, just a bit of a nod to the power of advertising when it’s done right.
Thing that caught my eye this week
Whew - look, this story about teens being cancelled at school is a must read. My head is still spinning after reading it. So much to digest; the mental health crisis affecting teens in the wake of Covid, the misunderstanding of terms like ‘assault’ and ‘abuse’, how vicious the rumour mill can be, racism, misogyny, sexual politics, layers upon layers of complexity and how young people on every side of this crisis can be educated on the issues and properly counselled and cared for when incidents like those mentioned in the article come up. Seriously, go read it. There’s a whole lot to think about here.
Food For Thought
Momentary discomfort doesn’t mean you should quit. Feeling like you don’t know what you’re doing doesn’t mean you should quit. Telling yourself you’re not good at something doesn’t mean you should quit.
All of those things mean you’re on the verge of a breakthrough, you just have to be patient enough to see it through.
Stop cutting yourself off before the good shit happens. Furthermore, stop complaining that the good shit never happens if you’re not willing to ride through the tough bit to get to it.
The road to the next level ain’t always straight - enjoy the detours babes.
You should subscribe to the paid version of The Murmuration because…
On Monday’s paid version of The Murmuration, I’m talking about my decision to no longer use filters on my Instagram pics. Is it a drop in the ocean against toxic, patriarchal, unachievable beauty standards? Sure. Is it a revolutionary act to be like ‘here’s my 41 year old face, just how it looks, the way it is’? It really shouldn’t be, though it feels like that’s where we find ourselves. But fuck it, you’re getting these wrinkles and laugh lines and grey hairs, unfiltered from now on, ‘cause I’m not trying to be part of the problem.
Your Weekly Biggie Smalls (P)update
This week, Biggie wants to encourage you to rest, slow down, get cosy, take a nap. You don’t need to be on the go all the time. You time is important and needs to be prioritised. So, stop for a bit. Things won’t fall apart when you do. Everything will be OK.
Until next week, smile at strangers, spread good vibes, be nice to people.
