I saw a post this week online and had to laugh; some influencers had shown up for a press trip and they were all dressed the same - in some cases the exact same outfit, but primarily all the same aesthetic. This was unplanned, but spoke to the power of how online we all are, how much we’re influenced and how much we’re taking in, even if we may think we’re resistant to being swayed in these ways.
It got me thinking about how conformity is so pushed upon us, that if we dare to think outside of these conventions and make choices that might buck the status quo, it can be really panic inducing.
That seems especially true once you are over a certain age. Experimentation, going-with-the-flow and general tomfoolery are reserved for youth, it seems. There’s a general consensus that come a certain age (and I’m not even sure when it is, let’s say around 35 or so), you should have it all figured out and be settled down into your forever life. Or at least your until-retirement life, at which time, you can reassess.
And I’d just like to go on record here to say…FUCK THAT!
